Encoder Fan Cart
The Encoder Fan Cart is a large fan on a light-weight cart. It offers students the ability to perform kinematics and dynamics experiments with constant acceleration, variable mass, variable thrust, and variable thrust angle. The cart includes a Motion Encoder Transmitter for use with the Motion Encoder System. The fan has three speeds for studying the effect of variable thrust. Two mass bars let you change the total mass of the cart to observe how mass affects acceleration. The fan turns on a protractor base, allowing the thrust to be directed at a known angle from the direction of travel. In this way students can investigate vector component applications. A sail is included to perform the fan-on-a-sailboat experiment. The sail can be mounted in two positions to study the subtle effects of diverted airflow. Although the cart can be used for qualitative experiments alone, most often it is used with a Motion Encoder on a Dynamics Track. A Fan Cart without the transmitter is available at a lower cost (See product CART-F). Included:Encoder Fan CartMotion Encoder TransmitterMass bars (2)SailUser manual The Encoder Fan Cart requires four AA batteries (not included) and the Motion Encoder Transmitter requires two AAA batteries (not included)

Eddy Current Brake
Eddy current brakes are used as a braking system for high speed trains and roller coasters. Recreate this unusual braking system in your classroom or laboratory by installing our Eddy Current Brake into the end cap of a Go Direct Sensor Cart, Motion Encoder Cart, Standard Cart, or Plunger Cart. As the cart moves over the track, the magnets in the Eddy Current Brake create an electromagnetic drag on the cart that is proportional to the cart’s speed.  The Eddy Current Brake can be used in a variety of experiments:  Investigate the relationship between induced drag and the number of magnets and their position in the brake. Compare the braking force created by the brake to that of our Friction Pad. Note: The Eddy Current Brake is not compatible with our older metal dynamics carts that were part of the Vernier Dynamics Systems sold from 2005–2012.

Sensor Cart Physics
Sensor Cart Physics, authored by Roger F. Larson, features 21 guided-inquiry investigations using the Vernier Go Direct® Sensor Cart. It provides a stimulating structure to explore introductory through AP-level concepts in kinematics, dynamics, and conservation of energy and momentum. The Go Direct® Sensor Cart is equipped with three sensors: a motion encoder wheel that reports the cart’s position, velocity, and acceleration; a force sensor with a range of ±50 N; and a 3-axis accelerometer—providing hands-on opportunities to explore basic physics principles. The sensor data are transmitted via Bluetooth®  wireless technology to devices for inspection in the free Graphical Analysis™ 4 app. Each of the investigations provides an experiment video or photo to offer guidance. Links to internet background information are included in the Introduction which tie the topics to real-world phenomena. The links can serve as pre-lab assignments to introduce each investigation. The Research Question and Predicted Outcome sections are incorporated to engage student interest and provide a meaningful purpose for the investigation. Note that these experiments challenge students to develop their own experimental procedures and record their data without pre-made data tables. Students are directed to write their own conclusions in response to research questions and to design their own extensions to the included experiments. This set of experiments complements guided-inquiry and Modeling Instruction™ classrooms.

Diffraction Apparatus
Use the Diffraction Apparatus to map light intensity vs. position for various slit geometries. The Diffraction Apparatus let students create, view, and measure diffraction and interference patterns. The included Red Diffraction Laser provides a clean monochromatic light source. Slits are made by depositing metal film on glass, creating extraordinarily clean slits with fully opaque blocking areas. These high-precision slits cast clean diffraction and interference patterns, ideal for quantitative matching of intensity vs. position predictions. The Linear Position Sensor and High Sensitivity Light Sensor completes the Diffraction Apparatus. In order to provide excellent spatial resolution, a selectable entrance aperture restricts the width of the pattern viewed by the High Sensitivity Light Sensor. The light sensor has three ranges, allowing the study of fine details or gross features of patterns. To measure position, the light sensor is mounted on a novel Linear Position Sensor. This position sensor uses a precision optical encoder to measure translation with better than 50 micron resolution. Since it is optically based, without gears or racks, it has zero backlash. Data collection is performed by choosing a slit, directing the laser through the slit, and choosing an entrance aperture for the light sensor. Both the light sensor and position sensor connect to your interface. The light sensor is moved by hand over a 150 mm distance, tracing out the diffraction pattern. The Diffraction Apparatus requires a Combination 1.2 m Track/Optics Bench individually or part of the Dynamics Cart and Track System. An optional Green Diffraction Laser is also available, so that the effect of wavelength on the pattern can be measured.
