The Dynamics Cart and Track System provides students with the tools they need to explore kinematics, dynamics, momentum, and energy. This versatile system can also be easily adapted to study optics, color, and diffraction.

The Dynamics and Track System is ideal for studying Newton's second law, acceleration on an inclined plane, conservation of momentum, and much more. This traditional cart and track system features an aluminum track, two low-friction, plastic carts, an ultra pulley, and all of the necessary attachment accessories. Easily attach sensors (sold separately) to carts or to the track for data collection, like a Motion Detector, Dual-Range Force Sensor, Wireless Dynamics Sensor System, Photogate, or an Accelerometer. Add the Vernier Optics Expansion Kit (OEK) and use the track as an optics bench.

The Dynamics Cart and Track Sytem includes:

Fan Cart
The Fan Cart is a large fan on a light-weight cart. It offers students the ability to perform kinematics and dynamics experiments with constant acceleration, variable mass, variable thrust, and variable thrust angle. The fan has three speeds for studying the effect of variable thrust. Two mass bars let you change the total mass of the cart to observe how mass affects acceleration. The fan turns on a protractor base, allowing the thrust to be directed at a known angle from the direction of travel. In this way students can ivestigate vector component applications. A sail is included to perform the fan-on-a-sailboat experiment. The sail can be mounted in two positions to study the subtle effects of diverted airflow. Although the cart can be used for qualitative experiments alone, most often it is used with a Motion Detector (MD-BTD) on a Dynamics Track (DTS). Adjustable Two-Foot Leveler
This leveler adjusts the height of one end of the Vernier Dynamics Track. You need two to support the track. Motion Detector
The Motion Detector is used to measure position, velocity, and acceleration of moving objects. It uses ultrasound to measure the position of carts, balls, people, and other objects. Color Mixer Kit
Experiments in additive and subtractive color mixing can be easily and conveniently carried out using the Vernier Color Mixer Kit. The Color Mixer Kit consists of a three-color LED illuminator with power supply, a lens, and a double-sided screen. The intensity of the red, blue and green LEDs can be smoothly controlled from the light source. Diffraction Apparatus
Use the Diffraction Apparatus to map light intensity vs. position for various slit geometries. The Diffraction Apparatus let students create, view, and measure diffraction and interference patterns. The included Red Diffraction Laser provides a clean monochromatic light source. Slits are made by depositing metal film on glass, creating extraordinarily clean slits with fully opaque blocking areas. These high-precision slits cast clean diffraction and interference patterns, ideal for quantitative matching of intensity vs. position predictions. The Linear Position Sensor and High Sensitivity Light Sensor completes the Diffraction Apparatus. In order to provide excellent spatial resolution, a selectable entrance aperture restricts the width of the pattern viewed by the High Sensitivity Light Sensor. The light sensor has three ranges, allowing the study of fine details or gross features of patterns. To measure position, the light sensor is mounted on a novel Linear Position Sensor. This position sensor uses a precision optical encoder to measure translation with better than 50 micron resolution. Since it is optically based, without gears or racks, it has zero backlash. Data collection is performed by choosing a slit, directing the laser through the slit, and choosing an entrance aperture for the light sensor. Both the light sensor and position sensor connect to your interface. The light sensor is moved by hand over a 150 mm distance, tracing out the diffraction pattern. The Diffraction Apparatus requires a Combination 1.2 m Track/Optics Bench individually or part of the Dynamics Cart and Track System. An optional Green Diffraction Laser is also available, so that the effect of wavelength on the pattern can be measured. Add a Friction Pad DTS to your Vernier Standard Cart, Plunger Cart, or Motion Encoder Cart, and watch the carts move under very consistent friction force. Setting the friction amount is as simple as turning a knob. Friction Pad DTS is not compatible with older metal dynamics carts.
